Released from the weight of tradition, the youngest of the major British newspapers has embraced change whenever it felt it necessary. After a year of transition, in 2004 it adopted a compact format; in 2005 it was redesigned; in 2006 it was reorganised; in 2008 it went full colour on all pages; and in 2010 it became more formal. That’s what happens when you’re the group’s l’enfant terrible. The Independent has gained in quality and is now more serious and elegant.
